Ant-Man and the Wasp

Ant-Man_and_the_Wasp_posterYear: 2018

Synopsis: Hank Pym, the Ant-Man, and The Wasp work to recover Janet van Dyne (the original Wasp) from the quantum realm, while other forces seek to steal and use the technology to their own selfish ends.

Pros:
• All the main actors showed a true comfort in their sometimes ridiculous roles. Ant-Man, the Wasp, and Pym were a great, often hilarious trio when working together. This was not a weak second outing.
• Felt as big as it was almost infinitely small.
• Seeing Michael Douglas heroically don the retro Ant-Man suit might just have been the best part of the film.
• Its connection with Infinity War (2018) and the coming Endgame (2019) were downright tantalizing.
• Was a genuinely fun and falsely lighthearted ride.

Cons:
• The surprising amount of exposition felt close to breaking down the consistent pacing.
• Was perhaps a bit too ridiculous for its own good at times.

Discussion:
Selfishness clouded the big heart of the film. The concept of right and wrong, especially since Captain America: Civil War (2016), has blurred ever so slightly in the MCU. Even if they are not antiheroes at heart, the things these super-powered people do can not only leave a giant mess, but can also be just as morally questionable as anything the supervillains do. Scott Lang/Ant-Man was literally serving a two year house arrest sentence for being a party in the destruction of that airport in Germany during the events of Civil War, Hank Pym (Douglass) now has trouble caring about anything besides what he wanted, Wasp/Hope (Lilly) was more than willing to fight for illegally obtained technology, the villainess Ghost no longer cared about who she needed to destroy to save herself from a path of pain and destruction she never wanted. Yet, it was through that selfishness that Pym was able to find one of the few things he cared about, and that success brought back the selflessness they all lost, personified through the impossibly still selfless Janet van Dyne. It might just be that new sense of selflessness that will help save what was lost due to Thanos’ victory …
