Captain America: The First Avenger

captain_america_the_first_avenger_posterYear: 2011

Synopsis: With his friend Bucky Barnes, an amiable, scrawny Steve Rogers from Brooklyn, NY, enlists to fight the nazis in Europe, but finds himself courted into a super-soldier experiment that leads to fighting the nazi-aligned HYDRA.

Pros:
A truly fun origin story that adds historical depth to the MCU. It is truly a good change of pace from the contemporary set pieces of the prior films. The whole cast is excellent. Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, who would later headline her own show within the MCU, is a more than welcome addition to the mythos.

Cons:
Practically being a prequel, any sense of peril for the Cap and other characters is negated.

Discussion:
This really is the best origin story depicted up to this point. It technically plays it safe, but has a lot of fun doing it. From a production view, there’s a subtle redemption arc, because Chris Evens played Human Torch in the mediocre Fantastic Four films (2005/2007), among other forgettable roles. He almost did not even accept Captain America, because of fear of typecasting or if the film bombed. Ultimately, this film is built to lead up to the coming Avengers film, but it’s still worth the price of admission from how it leads to so much else in the overarching franchise.
